Hitchin Food Rescue Hub awarded funding from NHDC to tackle food waste

The Hitchin Food Rescue Hub, a new organisation set up to tackle food waste in Hitchin, has been awarded a grant of £2,000 by North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Hitchin Committee*.

The group will utilise the grant to set up a ‘food boutique’ in Hitchin, which will operate as a weekly pop up café. Volunteers will collect surplus or unsold food from supermarkets and other local businesses and customers will have the opportunity to leave donations for the food on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. Refreshments and snacks will be on offer, so customers can stop for a cup of tea or coffee and something to eat if they wish.

The grant will go towards the cost of setting up the project, the purchase of equipment, signage, training for volunteers, resources for visitors, as well as contributing towards marketing and community engagement costs.

The project follows in the footsteps of the successful Best Before Café, which has been operating in Letchworth for the last 12 months, although both projects are financially independent from each other.
